My friends know I hate walking. I even abandoned a Walking Tour one time in Frankfurt and just go directly to the last site where the monuments and murals are. But at BGC, you can take me walking anytime. This world-class residential and business center  is home to myriads of arts lining up its streets and eye-catching murals which I dearly love.

Two weeks ago, my friend and I were walking along High Street when this mural in the 30th Street in the corner of 9th caught my attention. It was the Mio Mural.

It was made up of patterns and colorful shapes like that of my favorite tote bag. Yes, like my bag with an artwork filled with different colors, in a unique, textile-like quality. The big bold question “What’s your culture?” emblazoned on it is quite thought-provoking. Upon closer inspection, I’ve read that it was a work by visual artist Glenford Lumbao and it showcases Yamaha’s popular line of Automatic Motorcycles in particular the Mio series. The mural shows a visual narrative of different Yamaha Mio models in various scenes portrayed by an  adrenaline junkie, fashionista, a VR gamer, and a chef and how they relate to each other. The gamer equips a virtual reality headset. The Adrenaline Junkie gives paint to the artist that finishes the statement “What’s your Culture?” The artist gives a trendy piece of Art to the Trendsetter while the Trendsetter is on her way to her favorite chef. The go-getter chef hands in his latest food creation to the gamer.

The machines were integrated with each frame to showcase its integral role in our everyday lives. The Mio Motorcycles play a big part in Rolling Out A Better World the mobility it serves helps the community to Move Forward especially during the new normal.

During this pandemic, I realized how motorcycles play an important role in our society. The Filipinos love affair with motorcycles began in the 1990s and since then the Japanese brand of Yamaha have exceeded their limits and became a prominent figure in the industry. It was the time when the motorcycle become a necessity especially during the time I lived in the province and here in the City when the traffic has become a problem. In this pandemic, the motorcycles have become a bridge in our society bringing us together in these trying times. Just like the mural!

Yamaha’s mural is a striking visualization of the dichotomy between the individual and the collective. It shows mobility—in the form of the Yamaha Mio—as the common thread that binds all of us together. It reminds us of our roles in society, and how each of us, regardless of our background, could be of service to our community. Indeed, a tribute to the integral role motorcycles play in our lives. So, What’s Your Culture?

The statement is created to provoke the audience to ask themselves what kind of culture do they belong in or where do they want to belong? In this mural, the Yamaha Mio aims to make the people identify their Mio Culture and realize that even with different cultures we are all brought together by Mio which fuels our passion for Riding.

Immersing yourself in the riding community goes beyond owning a motorcycle, you must know what’s in it for you to choose the perfect machine that fits not just your needs on your daily ride but also your lifestyle. Go for the motorcycle that sets you apart and let you explore the culture you’ve never experience before.
