There was a time when I was in my mid 30s, I planned of walking way from my job. The stress was getting to me. But something stopped me from doing it, I was looking at my bank account and I computed that it won’t sustain me, even for just a year of taking a rest. That was a big wake up call. So I just used my vacation leave and sick leave and rest for a while.

Had I follow that pabigla biglang decison, i dont know kung saan ako pupulutin then. No adequate savings and no clear plans, i know that it would be the biggest mistake of my life.
This memories just came back to me when I attended Sun Life workshop a week ago on restarting your financial journey. Back then, I was still in that stage of my life where I have to start all over again. It hit me hard that i didnt have enough savings to decide what I want for myself. Added to that I still have a family, my mother and my two brothers who are still studying that time who depended on me.
This makes me realize that I need a sound financial planning and it should have been my priority. I realized that it was the beginning of restarting my financial journey. Very apt you might say with this workshop I’m attending.
So how did i do it? First was the realization that there is a need to restart my financial journey if I’m going to have a sound financial planning. Restarting my overall financial journey looks to be a daunting task. To get started, the first step is assesing my current financial situation. Luckily it was that time of the year when we have to submit our asset and liablities form. From there, I identify all my assets and liabilities and break them down into categories. In plain sight is my savings, investments, debt, and any other expenses. Like the previous years, after computatiom, Isaw that I still have minimal assets when it comes to cash in banks, properties etc. Ive been working for ten years then and yet I still don’t have enough. Such a sorry affair. I asked help from a my banker friend, he created a budget that will help me prioritize my spending and savings goals. He asked me if I have an insurance and when i said no you, he help me find one that I can afford by reviewing the insurance coverage. With regards to retirement savings plan, i have no problem because the company I’m working for had it mapped already ensuring that I am adequately protected.

Finally, he gave me five sound financial plans that still follow up to this day, namely:
1. Start budgeting and tracking your expenses.
2. Create an emergency fund.
3. Pay off any existing debts.
4. Invest in different types of assets.
5. Review your plan regularly.
