When COVID-19 hit, we were sidestrack in a way where many of us were caught unaware. The COVID-19 pandemic has had such a huge impact on our health goals and lifestyles. By now, we already know how many countries have implemented strict lockdowns, causing disruption to our daily routines and social lives. Moreover, this has put in place a number of health challenges, like increased stress and anxiety levels, we saw how some of our friends and relatives succumbed to it. What’s shocking is that I have one or two very health goal minded relatives who died of Covid. And one is in his 20s, so young.
There’s also lack of physical activity, and social isolation. But what made the most impact is that the pandemic has had on our long-term health goals, with many people struggling to access affordable healthcare, medications, and other essential health services. What is alarming is that some businesses have had to close or adapt their operations, leading to job losses and financial insecurity. All of these factors can have a negative impact on our mental and physical health, which in turn can affect our ability to reach our health goals.
ADDRESSING HEALTH GAPS
Covid had made us more realized of the big health gaps in our lives. People with disabilities, lower socioeconomic status, and ordinary ones like us just began thinking access to preventive and primary care, access to specialty care, access to medications, and complex coordination of care. Do we have money stashed somewhere? Are we prepared? Seeing how expensive it is to have COVID, we saw how many suffered. I know of a friend who almost sold everything he owns and yet he still have a million he owed the hospital, but he still lose that loved one.
Finally, the economic ripple effects of the pandemic have caused people to lose their jobs and health insurance coverage, leading to fewer resources to take care of their health. It is those time you wish, you have an insurance coverage somewhere.
In my case, we thanked God that our family did not experience the hardship of having COVID. We are prepared because we have insurance coverages. But the question is, can our insurance help us go through it. Makes me want to smash my head when we did not avail more of the plans offered by friend who is a Sun Life Advisor.
Last year, we saw her again and she said its not yet too late.
